The double wing offense is one of the true classic football attacks. It is as fundamental to the football run game as the alphabet is to reading.
Vintage concepts such as:
- Building a wall
- Changing blocking schemes while not changing the point of attack
- Empowering offensive linemen by allowing them to call blocking assignments
...are just a few of the considerations touched upon in this video by longtime Wilmington IL High School head coach Jeff Reents. Coach Reents has managed to tweak this classic offense and bring it fully into the modern era, and he shows how he's done that in this video. In fact, his team just won the 2021 IL 2A State Championship using the very same concepts taught in this video!
Why the Double Wing?
Illustrating plays on a white board, Coach Reents clarifies each concept with game video. Although this is not a drill based video, Reents provides an overview for his program's success. You will learn six solid reasons you should run the double wing, including ball control, deception, and creating conflict.
Tags and Practice Plan
By using tags, Coach Reents he can turn 6 to 8 basic plays into 50 or 60 plays. He puts this on display by running through:
- Outside Buck
- Outside Buck Short
- Outside Buck FB
- Outside Buck Power
- and more
Next, Reents goes through his practice plan, which shows exactly how he implements the system with his players. By the end of the video, you'll come away with a complete understanding of the double wing offense.
This video from Coach Reents includes the fundamentals of his successful Wilmington double wing offense. The concepts shown are tried and tested, and are great to know regardless of what scheme you run.

The power double wing offense can create a balanced attack that is tough to defend. Using a variety of diagrams and film, Coach Jeff Reents breaks down the blocking schemes for a power run, sweep run, and a counter trey run. Reents charts the blocking for an even-front and an odd-front to prepare all blockers for their responsibilities. While doing this, he provides his own personal tips that have given his teams great success over the years.
Preparing for Even & Odd Fronts
Coach Reents shows how to create walls with offensive linemen to slow down all kinds of defenses. He diagrams the three types of running plays with color coding to make installation as easy as possible. You will learn how to create a wall with four offensive linemen that scrape down the line, the responsibilities of the fullback, quarterback and pulling guard on their blocking responsibility, as well as how to coach a player to adjust during the game when the defense tries different schemes.
